New gelato and sorbet flavors created from Sugar Crisp table grape variety

International Fruit Genetics LLC (IFG), a table grape breeder with global presence and boasting over 48 patented table grape varieties, is inspiring one innovative chef to create new and exciting gelato and sorbet flavors. Chef Athina Goulasi, of Epik Natural Greek Gelato, a boutique gelato parlor in the heart of Athens, Greece, in cooperation with the Greek Grape Company, an IFG licensee, has transformed the Sugar Crisp™ varietal into a popular gelato flavor.

The Greek Grape Company is the largest producer in Greece of Sugar Crisp™, Sweet Globe™, Jack Salute™, and Sweet Celebration™ grapes. Last year, Goulasi worked with the Greek Grape Company to create a natural sorbet from the Sweet Globe™ table grape, that became an Epik Natural Greek Gelato sensation for the summer.

This year, the Sugar Crisp™ sorbet is creating a similar stir. The Sugar Crisp™ is a green grape that boasts a sweet melon flavor that is both satisfying and crunchy. Goulasi chose Sugar Crisp™ for its “…refined, smooth taste which transitions into a delicious gelato complete with a gentle grape aroma that will satisfy the most delicate taste buds.” Additionally, the Sugar Crisp™ table grape variety happens to be one the most popular fruits in Greece during the autumn season.

Goulasi comes from a long line of dessert connoisseurs, as her grandfather was one of the oldest pastry families of Thessaloniki and sold ice cream in the town square. Goulasi and Epik are continuing that tradition and have chosen to work with the best Greek growers, using only natural ingredients and sourcing sustainable, high-tasting materials that can be made into a high-end gelato with no additives.

“It’s exciting that some of the most popular table grapes in Greece are grown 20 minutes from my hometown, in the area of Halkidiki where most of us love to holiday,” said Goulasi. “My goal was to create a gelato that will bring summer memories in autumn to our customers with a smooth taste and a subtle laid-back aroma.”

“We are always thrilled that we can support our licensees and retailers as they create unique and exciting ways to enjoy the many IFG table grape varietals,” said Andy Higgins. “Our goal is to set the bar for innovation and flavor while surprising and delighting our consumers. We applaud Epik and the Greek Grape Company for their efforts to bring the best and brightest of IFG varietals to the people of Greece.”
