This season, more than 50% of Chilean table grape exports will correspond to new varieties

According to the second estimate of the ASOEX Table Grape Committee, which the organization presented at the end of October, this season, for the first time, more than 50% of the volume of table grapes exported by Chile will correspond to new varieties; specifically, 53% compared to 49% last season.

"The Committee's second estimate very clearly shows the increase in exports of new varieties," stated the president of ASOEX. “This season Chile will export more than 36 million boxes of new grape varieties. That's a 14% increase, or 4.7 million additional boxes, which shows that the varietal replacement in the industry is a reality, especially considering that traditional varieties have decreased by 25% or more than 10 million boxes compared to last season."

48% of the new varieties that will be exported in this new season will be red, 39% white, and 13% black. The new varieties' increased because the white varieties grew by 55% amounting to more than 14 million boxes, as the new red varieties remained in almost 18 million boxes and the new black varieties decreased by 7% to 4.6 million boxes.

"The volume of two of the three largest new varieties -the Timco and Allison varieties, both of which are red- fell by more than 700 thousand boxes, reaching 4.5 and 3.6 million respectively. Meanwhile, the white Arra 15, Sweet Globe, Timpson, and Autumn Crisp varieties are projected to reach 3.6, 3.0, 2.4, and 2.1 million boxes, respectively, contributing the most to the growth of the new varieties, i.e. some 4.3 million boxes, accounting for 92% of the total growth," stated Ignacio Caballero, coordinator of the Table Grape Committee of ASOEX.

In the case of the new black varieties, the Sweet Favors variety stood out with a 6.3% increase, reaching 1.3 million boxes. The rest of the main black varieties remained equal or experienced a decrease, as was the case of the Sable seedless (-3%), Sweet sapphire (-9%), Maylen (-30%), and Midnight Beauty (-23%) varieties. "Still, the offer of new black varieties is quite attractive with more than 4.6 million boxes."
