"Weak consumption and rising tariffs make it difficult to export Nanfeng tangerine"

The Jiangxi Nanfeng Tangerine is famous for its thin skin, tender flesh, juicy taste, and rich nutrition. The fruit is small, and it is one of the finest varieties of ancient Chinese citrus. The new season of Nanfeng tangerines was launched on October 8th. Recently, Freshplaza contacted Mr. Kyle Zeng of Shaanxi HoVo Import & Export Co., LTD for information on Nanfeng tangerines this year.

"Nanfeng tangerines were greatly affected by the weather this year. There was no rain in the production area for 100 consecutive days, which caused the fruit to lack water during the expansion period and grow slowly. Therefore, the production season was delayed by 10 days, and the fruit was smaller in size. The weight of each fruit is low, the water content of the fruit is not as good as in previous years, and the overall yield was reduced by 30% to 40%. However, the sweetness is high. Compared with previous years, the sweetness of the tangerine was only 13-14 degrees due to excessive rain last year. The fruit is sweet this year, and the Brix level is high, currently 15.5-16 degrees."

"In response to the decrease in production, the price has risen accordingly. The purchase price at orchards has risen from 2.2-2.4/ yuan/kg last year to 3.0 yuan/kg this year. The export cost has also risen. In previous years, the cost of a 9kg box was about USD 6.5-6.8, and it costs USD 7.5-8.2 this year, an increase of 15%-20%. The fruit diameter of tangerines exported in previous years was 3.8-4CM, while it can only start from 3.5CM this year. There are not many fruits in big size."

From early to mid-October, the exchange rate of the US dollar has been more favorable to China's export. Kyle said that the impact of the exchange rate is not significant, and it is only a short-term positive. In the long run, when the exchange rate changes significantly, the export price will also be adjusted.

Nanfeng tangerines are similar to sugar tangerines in appearance, both of which are loved by domestic consumers, and both are exported. According to Kyle, Nanfeng tangerines are more durable in storage and transportation than sugar tangerines, and that's why they have a larger export volume and more export destinations. Nanfeng tangerines are mainly exported to the Southeast Asian market. Kyle described that the current market response is relatively cold, "Due to the increase in the cost of tangerines, the total cost of each container has increased by about USD 2,800, which is relatively high for the consumer market. Moreover, the consumption of the Southeast Asian market is weak, and the tariff of Bangladesh has increased by 20%, making it more difficult to export. In view of this, the current situation of tangerine exports is not as good.”

Shaanxi HoVo Import and Export Co., Ltd. mainly engages in fruit and vegetable products and has its own fruit processing plant. The company's main export markets for Nanfeng tangerines are India, Bangladesh, Thailand, and other Southeast Asian countries, as well as the Middle East such as Dubai.
