"Overseas customers for honey pomelo import less"

The domestic honey pomelo season started in August in China, and it is already halfway through. Although the shipping cost has been reduced, the export of honey pomelo is facing many challenges due to the reduction of consumer power in Europe and the situation in Russia and Ukraine.

Wen is from the Pinghe Flourish Fruit Industrial Co., Ltd, an exporter of honey pomelos. He first introduced the production situation of this season's honey pomelo at the origin. "The planting area of honey pomelo has not changed significantly this season compared with previous years. There was less rain before harvest, which resulted in smaller fruit sizes, and cracked fruit, resulting in a significant reduction in yield.”

"In terms of exports, this season's honey pomelo export season is expected to last until the end of December. The overseas market is still mainly in demand for white pomelo, and a small part for red pomelo. The recent export price is not much different from previous years. Our order volume is higher than last year's. There is a slight increase, but it is still much less than in normal years. In particular, many customers are not optimistic about the consumption power in Europe and have reduced their purchases. On the other hand, sea freight is on a downward trend, so the transportation cost is lower than in the previous quarter." Wen said.

Russia has always been one of the main export markets for Pinghe Flourish Fruit Industrial. "Affected by the Russian-Ukrainian war, although Russia has restored the export supply qualifications of some companies, including our company, almost no ships can dock in St. Petersburg normally, so they can only take trucks or railways, which are complicated and expensive."

"In terms of domestic sales, the sales of our honey pomelo are generally good this year, and high-end varieties are in short supply.”

Pinghe Flourish Fruit Industrial has a planting base of 120 hectares in Pinghe County, Fujian Province, the core production area of pomelo in China, and the base has GAP certification. "On the basis of ensuring the quality of the fruit, this season, we have removed the traditional plastic nets and decorative ribbons on the outer packaging of the fruit, and only retained the film on the surface of the grapefruit to prevent rot and insect damage, reducing the amount of plastic by as much as 60%. I think that in the future, more and more customers will include suppliers' environmental protection concepts in the evaluation, and companies that optimize packaging will be able to stand out in the market."

Pomelo has certain requirements for fresh-keeping, and having its own fresh-keeping warehouse is a major advantage of Pinghe Flourish Fruit Industrial Co., Ltd. "As the honey pomelo season is halfway through, the exportable volume in the market is also gradually decreasing. Recently, we have also deliberately slowed down the sales speed and put some of the fruit in cold storage. When the market is in short supply, we can still supply those previous customers who have the demand."
