As the Russian war rages on in Ukraine and the effects are felt across the world, a few Ecuadorian banana producers and exporters have managed to increase shipments to Russia after an initial slump following trade disruptions and bans earlier this year.

Ecuador, the world’s largest banana exporting country has, up to the middle of this year (2022), seen a decrease of exports to Russia. However, Ecuadorian banana producers and exporters Fanalba S.A and Green Express both have Russian owners who were able to continue exports to that country over the past few months. This comes as many other companies could not trade effectively with Russia due to the various bans imposed, leaving these companies to fill the gap.

Green Express annually exports 200 000 boxes to mainly Russia. Mabel Alcivar, Lana Davrova and Olga Kabysh say they are looking to expand their exports to Europe. “We have no problem and are able to export to mainly Russian supermarkets. We are looking to expand our banana exports to Europe and further afield.”

Both companies were present at Fruit Attraction in Madrid as they seek to expand their exports and send more to Europe.
According to a statistics report from Ecuador’s Banana Exporting Association (ACORBANEC) in January and February of this year, an average of 8.1 million boxes per month were being exported to Russia. After the start of the conflict, shipments to the Russian market registered a notable fall estimated at 31.54% in March; In April, compared to exports in the same month of the previous year, this reduction decreased to -6.82%, and in May the difference compared to the same month of 2021 was reduced to only -0.28%.
The increased exports to Russia, which together with Ukraine represented a substantial 25% of Ecuador’s export market will go a long way to assist the country’s banana sector to survive the global ‘turbulence’ caused by a host of factors.
