Avocados have become a staple in the American diet. From toast to guac to tacos, the tasty fruit has made its mark and the demand of avocados is not slowing down.
The Avocado Institute, a one-stop digital resource by Avocados From Mexico, has new data to share on the industry from a report by Texas A&M University. The report reveals that during the 2021-2022 growing season, Mexican avocado imports have achieved record-breaking growth, impacting both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border.
Since 1997, the avocado supply from Mexico in the U.S. has jumped to more than 2 billion pounds annually and more than 4 billion pounds in the last two years alone.
The report shows numerous contributions from U.S. imports of Mexican Hass avocados to the U.S. economy. These contributions include:
- $11.2 billion in economic output
- $6.1 billion to the U.S. GDP (value-added)
- 58,299 U.S. jobs
- $3.9 billion in labor income
- $1.3 billion in taxes
The growth of Mexican avocado imports has also had a positive impact on growers in the U.S. and Mexico, with the report showing that domestic avocado growers have benefited from higher price points and a larger market for their products. In Mexico specifically, avocado farming continues to be a feasible and reliable business venture as the Mexican avocado industry creates approximately 78,000 direct and permanent jobs and more than 300,000 indirect and seasonal jobs, with more than 30,000 growers and 74 packers.
The driving factors behind this continued expansion of economic activity have been fueled by dramatic growth in U.S. demand for avocados and equally dramatic growth in the U.S. import economy. Hass avocados now compromise about 95 percent of all U.S. avocado consumption.
