US: UNFI revs up sales growth in fiscal 2022
United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) rebounded with strong 2022 fourth-quarter and fiscal year sales gains after cycling pandemic-driven results a year ago, with adjusted earnings per share in line with Wall Street estimates. Providence, Rhode Island-based UNFI also unveiled a partnership with robotics specialist Symbotic to automate several of its distribution centers over the next few years. For the fourth quarter ended July 30, net sales totaled $7.27bln, rising 8% from $6.74bln in the fiscal 2021 quarter, when the top line dipped 0.5% as UNFI lapped sharp customer demand fueled by COVID-19.

Belgium: Bio-Planet Sint-Denijs-Westrem featuring the new store concept opened
Bio-Planet opened a brand-new store in Sint-Denijs-Westrem. “We are very proud of the brand-new greenhouse for fresh fruit and vegetables”, store manager Peter Geirnaert explains. “The greenhouse is connected to the refrigerated freshmarket with the dairy products, cold cuts and cheese and benefits from the cold flowing from it. Without using extra energy, we reach a temperature of 9 °C and a humidity of 75% in the greenhouse. These are optimum storage conditions, allowing us to counter food waste”. Furthermore, Bio-Planet is using vegetable panels of the Belgian start-up Circular Matters for the store's interior. The strong, 100% recyclable panels are made of fibre and a binding agent from residual flows generated by agriculture and the food industry.

Holland: Just Eat Takeaway shares leap 10% on forecast of underlying profit
Just Eat Takeaway.com NV, Europe's largest online food ordering and delivery company, said it expected to make an underlying profit in the second half of 2022, sooner than previously forecast. The company's shares jumped by 10% to 15.74 euros in Amsterdam shortly after the announcement. Just Eat said in a statement it would have positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) for the second half of the year, compared to an equivalent loss of 134mln euros in the same period of 2021.

Botswana: Choppies reports 141% growth in full year profit coupled with rise in sales
The restructuring strategies put in place by Botswana retailer Choppies, continue to bare fruit as the company reported a triple digit growth in its full year profit for the period ended June 2022. The retailer registered a 141% growth in profit from BWP60mln (US$4.4mln) attained the previous corresponding period to BWP145mln (US$10.8mln). New Zealand: The Warehouse in talks with supermarket chains over grocery range
