Concern over the crisis in the Panamanian banana sector in Bocas del Toro

After the recent closures due to the conflict between the Chiquita company and the workers, the Minister of Labor and Labor Development, Doris Zapata, said they had asked the company and the workers to meet to dialogue and that the Ministry of Labor would act as a mediator in this problem. "Today, the company managers and the workers are having a sincere conversation and we are looking for points in common to be able to solve the situation we are currently facing in the province of Bocas del Toro," she said.

The crisis in the banana sector in this province could cause the closure of the Chiquita company in Bocas del Toro, which, according to Raul Gigena, director of human resources of the company, would cause the loss of about 6,000 jobs. Thus, they are looking for alternatives to cope with the crisis so that this does not happen.

The production in Panama has not been yielding the expected results and the situation is critical, as they have lagged behind other companies worldwide, he added.
