Peruvian avocado producers focus on domestic market due to global oversupply

The Association of Hass Avocado Producers and Exporters of Peru (ProHass) has stated that encouraging domestic consumption of avocados is key to reducing the impacts associated with an oversupply in the international market.

José Antonio Castro Echecopar, director of ProHass, explained that shipments of Hass avocados from the high Andean valleys were affected during the first half of 2022 as a result of the war in Ukraine, a conflict that caused the European market to be saturated. with the supply of other countries.

With the war in Ukraine and the closure of Chinese ports due to Covid, a market of almost 300 million inhabitants was lost, so countries such as Israel and Morocco had to unload their avocados in the Old Continent. Consequently, the avocado from the small producer in the Peruvian highlands was no longer necessary.
