Because of the unusual weather conditions, the volumes of tomatoes are much higher than in previous years (up to 30%), and producers in the Alsace region are doing everything they can to sell their tomato stocks. The lack of demand and the saturated market is making their task even more complicated.
The decline in sales can be explained by a harvest peak that occurred during the summer holidays and an increase in “homemade” productions since the pandemic.
According to Fabien Digel, director of the Fruit and Vegetable Interprofession of the Alsace region, the problem also lies in the difficulty to sell the products to the stores. “Most of the tomatoes found in supermarkets actually come from other French regions or Spain.”
