Consuming broccoli in summer helps maintain a tan and neutralizes free radicals from UV radiation

The summer season usually involves long hours of sun exposure which, linked to its intensity at this time of year, makes UV rays one of the external agents we must protect ourselves from during these days. At the same time, people can't wait for summer to get a tan, something that they should do by using protection and in a healthy manner.

Preserving a tan is a challenge, so finding formulas that allow us to keep it beyond the summer season is always good news. The Association +Broccoli has published that, according to the different results of the investigations undertaken by the team of the Phytochemical Laboratory of the Department of Food Science and Technology of CEBAS-CSIC, broccoli contains natural properties that contribute to maintaining the summer tan for longer and, at the same time, acts as protection against free radicals of ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

“Ultraviolet radiation causes skin damage and broccoli compounds (sulforaphane) activate cell defenses to protect themselves from the damage of ultraviolet radiation. In other words, the effect of sulforaphane reduces the damage caused by exposure to ultraviolet rays, defending the cell from the inside," stated Diego A. Moreno, a researcher at CEBAS-CSIC.

Likewise, the vegetable has other complementary properties. In addition to nutrients and vitamins, it has other carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein) and tocopherols, which act as antioxidants and contribute to neutralizing free radicals, such as those caused by UV radiation damage.

Why is it beneficial to consume broccoli in summer?
It's necessary to include in our diet a series of natural antioxidants that contribute to combat external agents and enhance their hydration so that our skin is bright and healthy. Broccoli has many of these natural antioxidants that our skin needs.

Broccoli has natural antioxidants that have a direct action on the skin, such as vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Broccoli also has bioactive and beneficial compounds, such as sulforaphane, which activates the proteins that defend the skin from the aggression of ultraviolet rays. Researchers recommend including it in summer diets, as it also strengthens the body's defenses, protects the eyes, and helps improve lung health. "This vegetable is not only beneficial for the skin, but also for the health of the lungs and eyes, which also receive more solar radiation during the summer," stated the CBAS-CSIC researcher.
