The Association +Broccoli has published that, according to the different results of the investigations undertaken by the team of the Phytochemical Laboratory of the Department of Food Science and Technology of CEBAS-CSIC, broccoli contains natural properties that contribute to maintaining the summer tan for longer and, at the same time, acts as protection against free radicals of ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
“Ultraviolet radiation causes skin damage and broccoli compounds (sulforaphane) activate cell defenses to protect themselves from the damage of ultraviolet radiation. In other words, the effect of sulforaphane reduces the damage caused by exposure to ultraviolet rays, defending the cell from the inside," stated Diego A. Moreno, a researcher at CEBAS-CSIC.
Likewise, the vegetable has other complementary properties. In addition to nutrients and vitamins, it has other carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein) and tocopherols, which act as antioxidants and contribute to neutralizing free radicals, such as those caused by UV radiation damage.
