Martin Bolhuis (Tuindersbelang):

"Dutch cabbage is pricey, but sales are running smoothly"

Cabbage sales are excellent at the moment. "It's expensive, but sales are running smoothly," says Martin Bolhuis of Tuindersbelang in the Netherlands, which organizes sales for some 60 cabbage growers. "White cabbage is currently priced at €0.53, and red cabbage at as much as €0.65. That's more than adequate."

"It's dry all over Europe, which is starting to have an effect. The whole of Europe is on the market for cabbage, and that includes the small sizes. Every country is participating," Martin explains. "Here in the Netherlands, we're well up to speed with the cutting, but we can get rid of the volumes well. We sell out every day."

Will prices stay this high? "It's still cabbage, so things can go either way. There's not going to be a huge supply available anytime soon, so the prospects look good. We'll see the state of the storage cabbage supply soon. But for now, we're taking advantage of the shortage in the market," Martin conculdes.
