Farmers union Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna:

‘Reasonable prices for onions or protests will follow’

Maharashtra onion growers are suffering from a financial crunch due to the losses they have incurred following a drop in prices. Therefore, the government should announce a grant of Rs 2000 per 100 kgs for onions already sold by the farmers this season and a fixed price of Rs 3,000 per 100 kgs for further sales, asserted farmers union Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna.

The association submitted a memorandum at the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s office and to Tehsildar Sharad Ghorpade warning of severe agitation if their demands aren’t met.

In the last three months, farmers didn’t receive a satisfactory price for summer onions. They are very dissatisfied with the low prices as they are not even recovering the production costs, let alone generating profits. Therefore, the government should announce a grant of Rs 2,000 per 100 kgs for farmers and a fixed price of Rs 3,000 per 100 kgs for future sales.
