Red Falcon by Consorzio Mundial

Sicilian netted melon season in full swing

"This year, harvesting started a few days late because of the weather, which delayed ripening. Thankfully, the current warm temperatures have led to sweet fruits with an exceptional texture, meaning we are in line with the high standards of Red Falcon melons," explains Consorzio Mundial president Domenico Raneri (in the photo).

Consorzio Mundial continues to do well, so much so that a steady number of companies has been joining it over the years. After all, it is a real club linked with a premium melon variety.

"There is no point in changing a winning team," comments Ranieri referring to the nine companies part of the consortium: Fonteverde, Masterfruit, FruttoMania, Salfrutta, Coop. Chiaramonte, Coop. San Tommaso, La nuova Falconara, OrtoBig and Soc. Sempl. G.R.A.L.. These producers own around 1000 hectares of Red Falcon, which represents an added value on the domestic and foreign markets (10% of the total), available via wholesale markets and big retail chains.

Red Falcon melons have a flavorful orange flesh. The variety is a true Italian masterpiece that puts sweetness and high-quality first. The fruits have a well-defined netting, a rind that withstands handling and transport well and a compact flesh. Strict quality checks are updated every year in line with indications from the Ministry of Health.

"The volumes expected for 2021 are in line with those of 2019 and 2020, with excellent grades and a Brix level between 14 and 17°. On the one hand, this is due to Nunhems genetics while, on the other hand, the specialization of the Sicilian production areas located along the southern coast conveys that something more to the produce. Our buyers recognize the produce on the shelves and go back to purchasing it, meaning we are on the right path. Results prove it."

Consorzio Mundial is currently working on innovating the product with early varieties and varieties resistant to fungal diseases, always in compliance with the best quality standards.

"We are at a good point with varietal innovation and would like to make the campaign earlier, maybe already as of next year, with a guaranteed quality for consumers and a secure income for producers."
