Strawberry cultivation system promotes additional sunlight exposure

Strawberries are a very light-sensitive crop, requiring prolonged exposure to sunlight to fully express their genetic potential.

Antonio Carrera is the inventor of an adjustable three-row system. He is very much aware of a strawberry's needs and took them all into account during the design and installation of his vertically developed systems. For instance, gutters are placed in such a way as not to shade each other.

"Good exposure to sunlight of an above-ground system is a factor that has a largely positive impact on productivity and fruit quality, as it promotes greater photosynthesis, more robust growth, and uniform fruit ripening. On top of that, it greatly prevents fungal diseases. On the other hand, inaccurate exposure to sunlight negatively impacts the yield," explains Antonio Carrera of Combimetal Carrera, a manufacturer of steel structures, including greenhouses.

He adds: "If we're talking about an existing structure suitable for hosting an above-ground system but lacking perfect orientation/exposure, we advise against installing the double row. In some cases, we have even declined to complete projects: our mission is primarily customer satisfaction; profits are just a consequence. However, if good exposure is achieved, allowing for maximum solar radiation capture during the growth and ripening period of the strawberry field, the installation of a third row is advisable. A reduction of even 30° could delay the harvesting by a few days compared to the first row, for example. The feedback received so far from farmers shows not only that our systems are effective and efficient but most importantly that the preliminary phases of design and installation were carried out with professionalism and loyalty."
