Chad Midgley is leveraging his upbringing in Davis County and the agricultural techniques learned from his father and Ruth Stout to cultivate citrus fruits, including oranges, pomelos, and kumquats, on a notable scale in Utah. Alongside these, he is also cultivating figs and pomegranates, diversifying the agricultural landscape traditionally seen in Northern Utah. Midgley's operation spans across 13 self-constructed greenhouses located in Ogden, Syracuse, and Bountiful, which are kept warm throughout the year using green waste and water masses.
Midgley's produce is available at local farmers markets, but his ambitions extend beyond sales. After over a decade of honing his cultivation techniques, he is now focused on empowering others to grow their own produce in Utah's challenging climate. He describes his Ogden greenhouses as a "permaculture playground," hoping to inspire the establishment of more community farms and gardens in the area. Midgley envisions a future where local growers are a viable alternative to large retailers, enhancing the community's ability to produce its own food.
