Pierneef Smit – Berda Fruit South Africa:

Electric fourwheeler: “The most cost-effective agri vehicle available in South Africa”

In 2019, Berda Fruit South Africa introduced South African farmers to electric TailG three-wheeler farm vehicles. It quickly gained market share for its fuel savings and low repairs, and almost 1,660 of these three-wheelers were sold since its launch four years ago.

This weekend, a four-wheeler model, the LEKKEWAAN, with larger, tubeless wheels, was presented. Judging by the initial sales, it is exactly what South African farmers have been waiting for.

"We're still selling the three-wheeler model, but we've diversified, so for farmers looking for a four-wheeler, the LEKKEWAAN is a natural choice," says Pierneef Smit, general manager at Berda Fruit South Africa, which imports the electric vehicles from China, where it is manufactured according to Berda Fruit South Africa specifications.

Farmers seem to agree: forty of the LEKKEWAAN vehicles have been sold over two days (the price is R58,200 (2,850 euros) excluding VAT and delivery), so interested parties are well advised to order ahead.

The LEKKEWAAN has a bigger 1,200 Watt motor, manual low-range transmission, and more battery power (five 12V batteries delivering 52 Ampère hour) than the three-wheeler, with excellent stability in navigating uneven terrain.

"This battery-powered vehicle is the most cost-effective agricultural transportation on the market," Smit maintains. "It combines cutting-edge technology, ergonomic design, and eco-friendly features to deliver unparalleled performance across various agricultural operations."

The LEKKEWAAN is fully charged within eight to twelve hours, which allows it to run for 30km.

"We are thrilled to introduce the LEKKEWAAN to the agricultural community," he adds.

"As worldwide demand for food and fruit continues to rise, it is imperative to embrace innovation and sustainability in farming. The LEKKEWAAN represents a significant leap forward in agricultural technology, offering farmers the tools they need to increase productivity, decrease cost, minimize environmental impact, and secure the future of food and fruit production."
