Startup Freshflow Ltd aims to curb food wastage with AI

"Wastage heavily erodes already thin margins"

Startup Freshflow Ltd has developed a software solution for supermarkets aimed at assisting store personnel in ordering the correct quantity of fruits and vegetables. It incorporates factors such as past sales, countries of origin, price, as well as weather conditions and upcoming holidays. Based on this data, the Freshflow software provides daily precise recommendations for order quantities. To date, the software has been deployed in Metro and Edeka markets. According to Freshflow, its use has reduced food waste by 20 to 25 percent. On average, one kilogram of food waste is equivalent to 1.2 kilograms of CO₂ emissions.

"Up to 15 percent of all goods end up in the bin. This is not just a CO₂ issue, but also a financial one. The wastage heavily erodes already thin margins. Using AI, we predict the perfect order volume," says Freshflow founder Avik Mukhija. The AI learns how various factors interact to affect demand. "For example, weather or price. So, we do not dictate how a factor should be evaluated. By the way, people with a lot of experience manage this well, but purely rule-based systems do not."
