While Peakopia brings many different fruit and vegetable varieties to market, green beans are the company’s main product. “We offer two types, light and dark, and they are grown year-round in three different regions of Mexico. We’ve been working with the same grower for years,” says Cindy Delgado with Peakopia. “Right now, production in Puebla is finishing up and we are transitioning to Morelos.” The third growing region is Sinaloa.
At the moment, the company ships about three to four loads per week. The beans cross the border in McAllen, TX and from there, they are shipped all over the US and Canada. “It has been a busy week,” commented Delgado. “Demand is medium to high, and the market has been up.” The average price is between $18 and $19 FOB Texas.
The US is a significant producer of green beans itself and nevertheless, there is a market for Mexican green beans. Delgado explains how green beans from Mexico differentiate. “All our beans are handpicked while beans in states like Florida and Georgia are machine harvested. Machines cause more damage to the product, affecting the quality. Because our beans are hand picked, we are able to offer a better presentation.”
Organics
Clients that are looking for high quality, hand-picked beans are also interested in offering an organic option. As a result, Peakopia and its grower are in the process of getting certifications to grow organically. “We hope to offer organic green beans by the middle of this year,” Delgado said. The main presentation for green beans is a 25 lb. plastic crate, but the company is in the process of developing a Peakopia branded bag.
