Even as demand remained as usual, traders said that they were disappointed as inadequate supply of quality mangoes affected sales. The four common varieties of mangoes sold in Madurai include sappattai, palamani, kalapadi and imam pasand.
G Kanthaiah, secretary, Madurai fruits commission traders association, said that apart from the weather, the supply this year across Tamil Nadu was affected because of powdery mildew disease, which affects mango crops, especially when it flowers, leading to poor quality fruits. "The production was only around 20% this year. Hence, all around there have only been losses for farmers and traders alike. It is disappointing," he added.
