The best collaborations are always the unexpected ones. Igor Tasso, a trader active in Italy and Europe who had never worked with Egyptian onions, knows this all too well.
"The situation on the onion market is extremely difficult at the moment. Thanks to the collaboration with an Italian operator who knows the Arab markets, Italian company Prime - which specializes in import/export and is led by Ismail Osama and his partner Magdy Mohammed - and with two Egyptian producers Golden Apple and Greenya, we are handling two containers a week of Egyptian red onions," reports Tasso.
"Bulbs are medium-large. Although it is not the most popular grade on the Italian market, clients make do with it due to the scarce local supply. We must say that Egyptian suppliers are adapting to European and Italian standards season after season, so quality has improved a lot."
The Netherlands are the main competitor, "but their prices are very high, so Egyptian onions win in most cases. The supply of Italian red onions is very low at the moment, another element that favors imports from Egypt."
Egyptian red onions will be available for another twenty days. "The last quantities should arrive on June 9th, then I will deal with watermelons from northern Italy and pears from Holland."
