According to traders from the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), the export of mangoes has increased this year due to a good supply of the fruit. They report that around 55% to 60% of the mangoes are currently being exported, compared to only 30% to 40% last year.
“This year there has been a good supply of mangoes since the beginning of the season. Thus, export of mangoes has picked up,” said a mango exporter. “Last year in March 30% to 40% of mangoes were exported. This year, 55 to 60% is being exported and the demand in the Gulf countries has increased tremendously on the occasion of Ramadan.”
Among the various varieties of mangoes, Konkan ‘hapus’ is in great demand. “Hapus from Devgad, Ratnagiri, Alibaug are in high demand in Gulf countries, London, Australia, Kuwait. Maintaining the quality of hapus in the international market plays an important role,” added another exporter.
The APMC records show that 81,000 boxes of mangoes entered the market on Monday, while 70,600 boxes were entered on Tuesday, with a stable price range of Rs. 1500 to 4000 per box. “This year, a large amount of hapus has entered the APMC fruit market compared to last year. Due to this, the export of mangoes has also increased with 55% to 60% being exported from Vashi.”
