According to official data shared by the Agri-Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), Michoacan produced 107,582 tons of lime in the first two months of 2023, i.e. 34.4% more than the 80,024 tons it produced in the same period last year.
These data place the state of Michoacan as the second largest producer of lime nationwide, only behind the state of Veracruz, which produced 170,965 tons of lemon in the first two months of 2023.
Buenavista leads the state production with 32,664 tons; it is followed by Apatzingan, with 25,180 tons, and Mugica, with 15,346 tons. These numbers also reflect the recovery of this activity in areas that, up until a couple of years ago, were under great pressure from organized crime, which led to a decrease in the production of limes.
With the production fully replenished the prices have also normalized, even though the fruit is more expensive than usual, as is normal at the beginning of every year.
According to the Federal Consumer Prosecutor's Office (Profeco), the average price of the Colima lime stands at 37.53 pesos per kilogram, i.e. some 7 pesos above its price at the end of last year. Meanwhile, Persian lime prices increased to 59.67 pesos per kilo.
