“In a couple of years, avocado crops are going to be as common as orange or lemon crops”

Avocado cultivation gains ground in Mallorca

In just 3 years, the hectares dedicated to the production of avocado on the island of Mallorca have tripled, from 5 registered with the CAP in 2019 to 16.5 in 2022, which are concentrated in the area of La Tramuntana and Muro.

Its cultivation in the Balearic Islands has not grown as much as in other Spanish producer communities but, based on its behavior in other similar places in the Mediterranean, the Ministry of Agriculture does not rule out that it may be a crop of great interest in the coming years. The highest concentration of this crop is located in the areas near the Serra de Tramuntana and close to the coast, where there are no frost risks; such as Sóller.

Miguel Tugores, a farmer who runs an avocado farm in Biniaraix, confirmed that there is increasing interest in planting avocados, especially in the area of Sóller, as an avocado tree can produce 40 to 50 kilos of avocados just two or three years after being planted. “In a couple of years, avocado crops are going to be as common as orange or lemon crops.”

Interestingly, most of the avocado produced on the island is not sold in Spanish stores and supermarkets, but in Germany.
