Niagara melon rootstock by TSI Italia

The three main characteristics of Niagara, the new melon rootstock about to be launched by TSI Italia, are vigor, rusticity and productiveness.

Niagara melon rootstocks by TSI Italia

After four years of screenings, field tests and trials with both public and private bodies, the technicians at TSI Italia - the Italian branch of Top Seeds International part of the Mitsui & Co group - have managed to develop a new melon rootstock that boasts all the characteristics necessary to become a high-quality product.

The peculiarity of Niagara (former MD-S) is that it is a smooth melon that stands out due to its ability to increase the precocity, production and vigor of all top grafts.

This is why Niagara can improve the aspects related with the final quality of the product (e.g. Brix level) and fruit uniformity, even facilitating operators during harvesting.

Field uniformity

During the trial years, it was noticed how Niagara offers excellent protection against diseases such as Fusarium oxysporum and Monosporascus cannonballus even when grown in problematic areas. It can also be used for the earliest transplants with a high adaptability in greenhouses, polytunnels and open fields.

TSI Italia reports an "excellent behavior in the nursery, where high germinability and excellent grafting affinity with the main melon varieties are guaranteed."

By introducing this new melon rootstock variety, TSI Italia aims at stressing how the company is working on an increasingly wider range of products that can meet the demands and needs of the market, producers and, of course, final consumers.
