Ecuador and Guatemala establish the phytosanitary requirements to import chirimoya from Peru

"After seven years of technical negotiations, SENASA and its counterparts in Guatemala and Ecuador have agreed on the phytosanitary requirements that will allow Peruvian chirimoya access to these markets," stated the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI).

"This national achievement is part of the Second Agrarian Reform's Second guideline, which seeks to promote more and better markets for family farming, as the opening of this market directly benefits more than 5,000 small producers in Lima, Ancash, Apurimac, and Moquegua dedicated to the production of this crop."

"SENASA continues to work to improve the phytosanitary conditions of the country's crops to access new international markets so as to improve the Peruvian producers' profitability and quality of life," stated Miguel Quevedo, the head of SENASA.

Currently, the agricultural health authority maintains the phytosanitary protocols required to export this fruit to EU countries, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, Bolivia, and Uruguay.

Phytosanitary requirements
"It's important to highlight that, in order to avoid higher costs in the shipping of this product, SENASA was able to achieve that no hydrothermal or cold treatment measures, which are normally used to mitigate the risk from fruit flies, be required to export this product," the Midagri stressed.

"In order to be exported, chirimoya shipments to Guatemala and Ecuador must undergo a phytosanitary inspection by SENASA, which will issue a Phytosanitary Certificate guaranteeing compliance with the requirements established by the importing country."

"Both the production sites and the chirimoya packing plants must be registered and authorized by SENASA before the start of the export season to these countries," the Minagri added.
