The increase in the arrival of containers with British potatoes to the Port of Las Palmas is having a direct impact on the inspection work carried out by the Border Inspection Point (BIP), which is responsible for analyzing products of animal origin, for human and non-human consumption.
"There's been a considerable increase in the number of containers. There are days in which up to forty containers of British potatoes have arrived at the BIP, stated Luis Ortin, the director of the Agriculture and Fisheries area of the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands.
The inspection service is doing everything possible to meet all requests. However, the delay is unavoidable. In addition, a shipment of 40 to 50 containers that was scheduled to arrive at the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife was diverted to La Luz, increasing the burden on the inspection service. "Not to mention the inspection of other goods that must be carried out routinely," Ortin stated.
