"Ready-to-eat technology helps Xiuwen kiwifruit reach a wider market"

Xiuwen kiwifruit produced in Guizhou was launched in late September, and the production season can last until March-April of the following year. Xiuwen kiwifruit, which is long and cylindrical, has the characteristics of wild kiwifruit, which has a strong fruity aroma and rich taste.

"The production of Xiuwen kiwifruit has been reduced this year due to the drought, but other quality indicators are normal, and the price of the production area has dropped compared with previous years," Mr. Shi from Xiuwen County International Investment Group told Freshplaza.

"There was no rainfall for more than 50 days in the production area this summer. The continuous dry weather has reduced the production of Xiuwen kiwifruit by more than 20%. The weight of the single fruit has decreased and the size is relatively small. All other indicators are normal, and the overall quality has improved compared to previous years."

"Xiuwen kiwifruit is usually harvested around September 20. The outbreak of the pandemic occurred in Guizhou at the beginning of the harvest season this year, and the harvest was delayed until the end of September. The entire harvest period is usually about 40 days, and this year it was shortened by about a quarter.

"Some buyers are unwilling to take risks, and the number of buyers coming to the origin is less than in previous years. This year, the price of Xiuwen kiwifruit in the production area has dropped compared with previous years, which has also affected the market sales price. But for the brand operated by our company, because the target group is relatively fixed, the price is basically stable, and there is little change from previous years "

According to Mr. Shi, the sales volume of kiwifruit this year is relatively slow compared with previous years. In order to boost sales, the company has increased its advertising investment, such as placing advertisements on the subway in Guiyang, where the company is located, and increasing activities such as tasting and gifting at dealers. The activity has achieved certain results, but because the market consumption power is not as good as in previous years, the boosting effect is limited.

On the other hand, the brand is also promoting "ready-to-eat kiwi" products. "We started researching the technology three years ago, and officially promoted it on a large scale this year. The concept of "ready-to-eat" has become very popular in recent years, but it is understood that some merchants in the market use ethylene as a chemical ripening method, which affects taste and safety. Different from this, we control the temperature of kiwifruit for physical ripening. While maintaining the taste and safety, we can guarantee that the kiwifruit will still have a shelf life of 7-10 days when it reaches the dealer."

Xiuwen County International Investment Group Co., Ltd. focuses on the "Qibugou" kiwifruit brand, and the "Guichang" variety of greenheart kiwifruit is the main product. The group has its own base of more than 133 hectares and cooperates with local cooperatives to adopt branding and standardization for unified management. The company has its own cold storage and processing plant. Sales channels include wholesale markets, offline supermarkets and chain stores (such as Shouyang, and Fresh Hema.), and online e-commerce sales.
