"Garlic demand decreases in many markets while exports to Russia remain unchanged"

Since the launch of new garlic at the end of June, the demand in overseas markets has been weak. Coupled with the large inventory of old garlic, the garlic market has been running at a low level and the shipment has been slow.

Mr. Zhang is the sales director of Jining Greenstream Fruit and Vegetable Co., Ltd. In an interview with FreshPlaza, Manager Zhang shared his views on the recent export market of garlic.

"Last year's garlic production was high, and the inventory in the northern region was more than 4 million tons. The new garlic was harvested at the end of May and June and stored in mid-August. Since then, the price of garlic has been declining. The FOB price was 600-700 US$/ton, a drop of nearly 30% compared with the same period last year,” said Manager Zhang.

"In terms of the market, although the sea freight has been lowered in recent months, and the freight of most routes has dropped by nearly 50% compared with the same period last year, the export volume is still not as good as in previous years due to the weak overseas market." Mr. Zhang said, " Not only fresh garlic, but other garlic products such as processed garlic have also experienced a decline in exports.”

Russia and Eastern Europe are among the leading export markets for Jining Greenstream Fruit and Vegetable Co., Ltd. "At present, the demand in Russia is relatively stable, basically the same as last year's period. Most of the products to Russia are transported by land. However, the goods to Ukraine can only be transshipped through Rotterdam, and the export volume decreased a lot."

When it comes to expectations for the garlic market in the next few months, Manager Zhang said, "I think unless extreme weather occurs, which would reduce production next season, garlic prices will continue to fall."
