Spanish fruit and vegetable exports to the US were led by garlic, onion, and pepper shipments

Last year, Spain exported 32,997 tons of fruits and vegetables to the United States (which accounts for 0.2% of all of its fruit and vegetable exports) for 78 million euro, according to data from the Department of Customs and Excise processed by FEPEX.

In 2021, Spain exported 31,267 tons of vegetables to the US. Vegetable exports were led by garlic (24,061 tons), onion (6,211 tons), and pepper (695 tons), which together accounted for 99% of Spanish vegetable exports and 94% of the total Spanish fruit and vegetable exports to the US.

Last year, Spain exported 1,730 tons of fruits to the US, mainly corresponding to lemons (501 tons), kaki (489 tons), and table grapes (426 tons).

"While it's true that the United States is an important market in terms of the number of consumers and purchasing power, Spanish fresh fruit and vegetable exports to this market are very small. This is due, on the one hand, because this market is farther away than the European market, which consequently has a greater logistical cost. The main reason, however, is that the US phytosanitary requirements are used as export barriers to prevent or make impossible the continuous maintenance of shipments," stated FEPEX.

"In addition, the tariffs that the US administration imposed on European products in the context of the dispute with the EU before the WTO, and which affected fresh citrus, peaches, cherries, and preserved pears were in force between October 18, 2019, and June 2021."
