Innovations for apple orchards in the plain

In these tough times for the entire fruit sector, it seems difficult to talk about renewal, however the only way to keep working is to innovate by planting varieties with a unique appearance, flavor and shelf-life.

“The plain can attain a quality higher than that of the produce from the mountains, such as the Zhen Aztec Fuji variety, which is certified and selected and boasting superior grades, flavor, juiciness and aroma combined with a deep red color - better than any other Fuji on the market," explains Giovanni Zanzi from F.lli Zanzi Vivai.

"Another variety that was recently introduced exclusively to us is Crea 105, derived from Lady William. It ripens 7 days after Fuji and boasts unique characteristics such as: minimum 16° Brix, constant non-alternating production, high productivity, no cracking, 10-month shelf-life, good aroma, crunchiness and juiciness. The streaky red color exceeds 90% in the plain and the average grade is 75/85.

“Another remarkable plain variety is Evil Gala, a certified variety holding the CPVO patent and recognized on a global level. It is characterized by a uniform bright red color on 100% of the surface and it ripens 7/10 days earlier than all other Galas. In addition, experimental tests carried out to compare it with other clones have revealed that production is not alternated and grades are high."

"The organic segment is also suffering. To deal with the problems, our company Zanzivivai Bio is working on a series of varietal and technical innovations."

More areas are dedicated to organic production with varieties recognized as extremely productive and boasting excellent organoleptic, esthetic and rustic characteristics, including: Crimson Crisp, Pinova, Goldrush, Golden Orange, Primiera and Topaz. "By employing a suitable technique, these varieties can help us come out of a difficult situation as winners."

“Quality is essential, but production and quality are just as important. In order to obtain good results in both the organic and traditional segments, we recommend using systems that can be entirely mechanized with pruning and thinning, i.e. the Guyot system."

"These solutions enable us to obtain high productions of a superior quality that require less skilled labor, especially since it is currently lacking. We can therefore state that apple orchards in the plain can be profitable and produce fruits that are recognized and appreciated by the market."
