The South African Government, via the Department of Transport that published a draft bill, aims to create The South African Shipping Company (SASCO).
The intention to create a government-owned shipping company with tanker services, container services, cargo, coastal shipping, as well as international import and export has been on the cards since 2017.
Disruptions in the supply chain caused by the Covid-19 pandemic showed the government the need for the South African Shipping Company to boost the local shipping sector.
