UK: Snappy Shopper boosts online orders for c-stores with 1p promotion
Fifty independent retailers across England and Wales reportedly achieved a 46% boost in online orders after taking part in a cost-of-living promotion through home delivery app Snappy Shopper. The campaign ran for three days (28 - 30 September) and during that time over 3,000 bundles were sold. UAE supermarket chain Lulu hires Moelis for IPO - sources
Abu Dhabi-headquartered supermarket chain Lulu Group International is planning an initial public offering and has hired investment bank Moelis & Co to advise it, two sources familiar with the matter said. Lulu, one of the largest supermarket chains in the Gulf region founded by Indian-born businessman Yusuff Ali, operates 239 stores in 23 countries and employs more than 60,000 people, according to its website.

Number of SPAR Express stores at Polish AVIA forecourts on the rise
Poland's AVIA forecourt network has announced that 25 of its locations now boast SPAR Express retail stores, with the number of outlets 'constantly growing'. AVIA, which is managed in Poland by the Unimot Group, and SPAR commenced their partnership in December 2021, with their first openings. AVIA stations in Kobyłka and Józefów, near Warsaw, are the latest locations to receive a SPAR Express store, the group said.

UK: Asda home delivery strike looms large amid pay cut concerns
The GMB union is set to ballot its members working as Asda home delivery drivers after learning of “shocking” management plans that include removing a pay supplement which, it claims, will see wages cut by £1.50 per hour. The ballot will close in four weeks' time. If the dispute continues, the GMB says that it may result in strike action in the run up to Christmas.

UK: Aldi welcomes more shoppers as they switch from major retailers
Aldi has welcomed more shoppers as they continue to switch from major retailers amid the cost-of-living crisis, new research has revealed. According to market research agency Kantar, the German discounter welcomed an additional 1.65mln customers in the 12 weeks leading up to October 2nd. The data from Kantar shows that Aldi took nearly £260mln in sales from other major retailers in that period, including more than £56mln in sales from Tesco as well as £12mln in sales from Lidl.

Poland eyes grocery chain as it takes back control of economy
Poland’s de facto leader has revealed a plan to buy the country’s biggest grocery chain, Zabka Polska SA, in the state’s latest attempt to tighten its grip over the economy. “We’re moving in this direction”, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the head of the ruling Law & Justice party, told a rally in Pulawy, eastern Poland. The government has pledged to “take back most strategic parts of our economy from the hands of the foreign capital”, he said. The state may also soon buy PKP Energetyka, a power distribution company, according to Kaczynski. Zabka and PKP Energetyka are owned by U.S.-based private equity fund CVC Capital Partners. Krzysztof Krawczyk, who heads CVC in Warsaw, declined to comment when contacted by Bloomberg.
