Richard Strijbis, Tovano:

"New apricot, date, fig crops usually herald strong last quarter"

The last quarter of the year generally causes a commotion at Tovano. "There's always something to complain about, but, for now, we're getting some nice new arrivals," says Richard Strijbis of this dried fruit and nut trading company in the Netherlands.

"We've already received the first dried apricots, and our Turkish supplier Ephesus should deliver the first figs by October 7. That, again, makes us the first in the Netherlands to have them available. These first figs are usually priced high, and due to a lower harvest, this year's no different. Nonetheless, true fig lovers always appreciate these."

Tovano already started with the first Spanish minifigs last month. "We don't sell truckloads of those at a time, but they're perfect for snacking. Plus, they always sell well at our customers, from specialty stores to supermarkets and exporters," Richard continues.

"We'll be getting the first Mazafati dates from Iran again next week, and the new Medjoul date harvest in Israel is about to start again too. Medjouls remain the crème de la crème among dates. We sell mostly small packs to supermarkets, but the bulk of these dates, in 5kg packs, go to Dutch fruit and vegetable wholesalers and exporters. We're also launching the new crop of Tunisian dates; that provides a great alternative for clients with slightly smaller budgets."

"Naturally, we, too, have to the economic situation and higher costs. That's causing considerable tension in the market. However, I'm not dissatisfied with how business continues to flow. We have plenty of great things coming up, and I'm optimistic about the year's end," Richard concludes.
