Italy: Alì closes stores on Sundays to save electricity bills
Italian grocery retail group Alì has opted to close its stores on Sundays and holidays in order to save on energy bills. In addition, the supermarket group, mainly located in the Veneto region, is increasing the production of renewable energy, using heat produced by refrigerators to heat sanitary water, rolling out photovoltaic systems and switching to LED lamps, allowing it to cut consumption by half. Speaking to daily Corriere del Veneto, company VP Gianni Canella pointed out that Alì has made a lot of efforts to curb price increases due to high energy prices, rising industrial prices and expensive transportation, to cushion the effects on customers' purchasing capacity.

UK: John Lewis plans ‘buy back or take back’ schemes in all product categories by 2025
John Lewis has pledged to have “buy back or take back” schemes operating in every product category by 2025 and to develop more rental and resale options as it steps up efforts to be a more sustainable business. The group, which runs Waitrose supermarkets as well as a string of department stores, will also invest £2mln over the next five years to restore and protect nature in Norfolk, a key source of meat, cereal and vegetable products, and in India’s Noyyal and Bhavani river basins, where it sources cotton, under a partnership with the wildlife charity WWF.

Thailand’s Central Retail to double Vietnam stores in 4 years
Thailand’s Central Retail plans to double more than the number of its stores in Vietnam from the current 340 to 710 by 2026 to capitalize on a growing market. The main retail arm of Thai conglomerate Central Group will spend 30bln baht (US$790mln) for the expansion, which it hopes will make it Vietnam’s biggest food and property retail platform.

Aldi has revealed where it’s still looking to open new stores after official data shows it has become Britain’s fourth largest supermarket. The supermarket, which has over 970 stores, said it planned to open 16 more stores before the end of the year and is set to create over 6,000 new jobs across the country this year as it continues to expand. The areas where Aldi is still looking to bring new stores include cities like Bath and Birmingham, as well as smaller towns such as Penzance and Maidenhead.

Deliveroo has opened its first shop, meaning London commuters can order groceries in-store and walk away with them in minutes. The outlet in New Oxford Street marks the delivery giant’s first foray into a bricks-and-mortar shop in the UK, having previously operated its rapid grocery delivery service, Deliveroo Hop, through the app. Deliveroo has partnered with Morrisons to sell more than 1,750 of its items, including ready meals, fresh food from its The Best range, and cupboard staples.
