Post-harvest solutions in the spotlight at Fruit Attraction

Termotécnica is exhibiting at Fruit Attraction 2022 in Madrid, Spain October 4-6 with DaColheita–FarmFresh packaging solutions. This is the fourth edition of the fair in which the company has participated in the Brazil Pavilion, coordinated by Abrafrutas (Brazilian Association of Exporters of Fruit and Derivatives).

“We showcase the added value EPS can offer such as longer shelf life, increased quality and decreased food waste, along with reduced air freight costs due to lower weight which also reduces the carbon footprint,” says Termotécnica's managing director, Nivaldo Fernandes de Oliveira.

Since the company began participating in these fairs, FarmFresh solutions have gained greater acceptance in the international agribusiness market. In four years, more than 1 million FarmFresh conservers have been used to export more than 4,000 tons of Brazilian fruit to countries across Europe such as France, Spain, England, Austria, as well as to the Middle East, Russia, China and Canada.

In four years, more than 1 million FarmFresh conserver boxes have been used to export more than 4,000 tons of Brazilian fruit to numerous countries.

Termotécnica's post-harvest solutions can increase shelf-life by up to 30 percent. Certified by tests in European laboratories (AgroTropical and Frutify), these results confirm the reduction in food loss and waste. With patented technology and designs, they allow high thermal insulation, easy stacking and transport. This also means more days with healthy fruit on the shelves providing advantages for the retailer.

An important aspect to serve the foreign market is sustainability. “Markets are ever more demanding regarding the environmental footprint of companies and we’re committed to this agenda by presenting solutions in line with these demands,” said Termotécnica president Albano Schmidt.

Termotécnica is a member of the Global Packaging Alliance, a global partnership for packaging recycling. A successful reverse logistics and recycling process example is Brazilian Tahiti Limes exported to the United Kingdom. With FarmFresh conserver boxes, fruit goes through the packaging, handling and storage processes and proceeds via sea freight to the UK. Termotécnica provides a list of local recyclers for the importer who, in turn, negotiates the sale to one of these recyclers who collects the post-consumer packaging for recycling.

FarmFresh conserver boxes contribute on three fronts:

1) In post-consumer recycling, EPS can be 100 percent recycled/transformed into raw material for other applications.

2) Increases shelf-life of fresh products by up to 30 percent which helps reduce losses and waste in the distribution/consumption chain.

3) Contributes towards decreasing the carbon footprint with the reduction of CO2 equivalent emissions in transport due to the solutions’ lighter weight. In a Green Domus study, comparing GHG emissions to transport a cargo of mango between Petrolina (PE) and Lisbon (POR), FarmFresh EPS packaging and pallets accounted for 5.44 percent fewer emissions than corrugated boxes.
