Co-op unveiled a new-look food strategy with a renewed focus on convenience and commitment to offer greater value, led by a major £37mln investment to slash the price of over a hundred products. Everyday favourites, from pizza, pasta and burgers to fruit and vegetables, have been lowered in price and ‘locked in’ into 2023 as Co-op responds to help its members, customers and communities who face rising household bills.

Dutch online sales grew 9% in first half 2022
During the first half of 2022, consumers in the Netherlands spent 16.1bln euros online. This is a 9% growth when compared to the same period a year earlier. The growth mostly stems from a rise in online sales of services. In total, Dutch consumers placed 168mln purchases online in the first 6 months of 2022. This is a finding from the newest Thuiswinkel Market Monitor, which shows consumer spending in ecommerce in the Netherlands.

Co-op launches accelerated support scheme for smaller suppliers with products from the first phase of innovative and values-led businesses hitting the shelves. Via the incubator scheme, known as ‘the Apiary’ is first to launch: Scrapples who take ‘wonky fruit’ to avoid food waste and create healthy snacks which are 100% fruit with no added sugar, salt or fat. At under 50 calories per bag they are popular with parents as lunch box fillers for children and, they will supply Co-op with its apple, apple and mango and apple and strawberry crisps.

Sainsbury's has urged shoppers to freeze foods they wouldn't normally consider to save hundreds on grocery bills. Pineapple: Chopped into bite-sized chunks. Berries: In reusable freezer bags or containers. Grapes: Can be eaten straight out of the freezer. Peppers: Slice and freeze them in reusable freezer bags. Fresh herbs: Chopped in an ice cube tray with some olive oil. Courgettes: Grated in a freezer bag.

Romania: Consumer protection authority fines hypermarket chain Auchan
Romania's consumer protection authority ANPC said it has fined hypermarket chain Auchan with 750,000 lei ($144,800/151,580 euro) for various irregularities related to pricing, storage and sale of expired goods. ANPC officials fined 50 Auchan stores in September, the authority said in a press release.
