Peruvian citrus exporter finds 'interesting margins' in Russia

The Peruvian citrus and exotic fruit exporter, Andres Orbegozo Tellez, from FamFruits Peru, has closed his citrus campaign with 38 containers shipped to Russia and the United States of America. “In Russia it was perfect, I keep sending, not only tangerines, I am also sending ginger and avocados. The only problem is that freight rates are very high for Russia, but there are still interesting margins in the business,” says Orbegozo.

He says thanks to many years of building trust and business connections in Russia he could meet the shortages in that market. “We have exported 38 containers from Peru to Russia and the United States (LA and Miami). I have clients in Russia who trust me a lot and therefore in Peru I have been one of the few companies that has shipped to Russia, to St. Petersburg port.”

Despite the Russian exclusion from the international banking systems Orbegozo was able to get his money from his Russian buyers. He was also able to navigate the shipping of the containers of citrus to Russia directly from Peru. “My clients in Russia send me money through India or Dubai. Yes, we have been making the effort for many years and thanks to the work I have suppliers who trust me a lot and market their fruit through my sales channels. We work through direct shipments from a port in Peru called Paita, it makes a direct trip to Saint Petersburg that takes 21 days,” he explains.

“I have been working with Russia since 2018, thanks to their support and trust I was able to grow and expand to other countries. Russia buys a lot of fruit from allied countries such as Turkey or Azerbaijan but its demand is much more, that is why Peruvian fruit fits perfectly,” states Orbegozo.
