Pierre Monteux, Solveg:

“The Banana of Guadeloupe and Martinique has a unique agroecological production”

The Banana of Guadeloupe and Martinique continues to occupy a special place on the French market. It is the only French banana and has a unique agroecological production which prioritizes alternative methods (fallow land, weevil traps, ground cover, sanitary leaf removal) and biocontrol products.

"These cultivation practices have boosted the return of biodiversity in the farms of Guadeloupe and Martinique, which now constitute a refuge for many species. The 200 earthworms per square meter and more than 200 species of insects (Cihence Study 2015) are natural predators that help control banana pests and protect the crops,” explains Pierre Monteux, general manager of Solveg.

A banana which meets many expectations
Launched in 2015, the segmentation of the French banana is now well established in mass retail because it meets many expectations. “For the distributors, the French banana has undeniable advantages: clearly identified French origin, reduction of breakage, clarity of the offer, better presentation, hygiene on the shelf and additional volumes. It also offers an ideal alternative to the consumers who want to buy French products and save time thanks to the barcodes that allow them to skip the weighing station.”

A nationwide presence
This innovative concept has allowed the Banana of Guadeloupe and Martinique to conquer new regions. Regional and area managers, working closely with store and department managers, have been in charge of deploying the product nationwide. Thanks to this system, the French banana is now present in more than 3,500 stores.

The Banana of Guadeloupe and Martinique is identifiable by its blue-white-red ribbon from the Dunkirk workshop. The site has an industrial tool that optimizes the wrapping and the protection of the fruit.

More diversity in the offer with the Fair Trade French Banana and the HEV Banana
Since 2018, the segment also includes the Fair Trade French Banana, which supports the small family farms. As for the High Environmental Value Bananas, they represent 15% of the production. The sector encourages its producers to obtain the certification, as an additional way to promote their know-how.

Presence at Fruit Attraction
The Banana of Guadeloupe and Martinique is a brand of Solveg, a group which includes UGPBAN, Fruits du monde, Murissol, Fruidor Bananes and Fruidor Terroirs. Solveg will be present at Fruit Attraction in Madrid on the 5th-7th of October (Hall 4, Booth B03B).
