Solar panels placed above cherry trees

The Dutch company GroenLeven has delivered another first, says Business Development Manager Ger Jan Wubs on LinkedIn: the world's first AgriPV setup above cherry trees. "After several successful trial years with soft fruits, we hope this dual function will also work with cherry crops," he says.

"In the Netherlands, cherry trees are covered entirely while they ripen. The semi-transparent solar panels drastically reduce this use. We've used these kinds of panels in our previous AgriPV setups."

"This pilot has them too, and we're testing panels from Swiss start-up Insolightin. A tracking algorithm dynamically controls the amount of light these panels allow through. That optimally balances renewable energy production and the cherry cultivation light needs," Ger explains.

They are monitoring the cherry crops under these solar panels in partnership with Fruit Tech Campus (Foundation).
