Alberto Montaña, General Manager of Vicente Peris

"We've sold 80% more of our melons than in all of last year"

Spain's 2022 melon campaign, which had a difficult start because of the influence that weather had on the production volumes in Almeria and Murcia, is advancing with high demand and good prices.

"The beginning of this season was very complex due to the weather changes. It forced us to work more meticulously than usual in the crops so that the quality of the harvest wasn't impaired," stated Alberto Montaña, general manager of the Valencian company Vicente Peris. "Despite the difficulties, we are having an excellent campaign and this is especially perceived in the quality of the most select melon," he added.

The company has surpassed last year's sales figures for its finest ‘18 Quilates’ (18 Carats) piel de sapo melon. "We have sold 80% more than throughout all of last year, a figure that we hope to increase during the last weeks of the campaign," Alberto Montaña stated.

The ‘18 Quilates’ melon brand is the oldest in Spain, as it was registered in 1947 by the company's founder, Vicente Peris, and is still on the market 75 years later. Peris is still a family business and it's currently run by the third generation.

The company's most select brands are the ‘18 Quilates’ and ‘Vicentín’ brands. Throughout this year, only a select 9% of its total production has been distinguished with either of these two labels. "We choose the best of the best melons for our gourmet brands. They are highly recognized and valued by customers who expect a specific quality," Montaña stressed.
