Jose Maria Naranjo, from Tany Nature:

"Extremadura confirms, once again, that it is a reliable stone fruit producing area"

Extremadura's stone fruit campaign is now in full production. This is one of the few producing areas in Spain where the harvest has not been affected by the weather.

"Extremadura confirms, once again, that it is a reliable production area. We haven't had any major supply problems in recent years and we are increasingly recognized as an area that offers the full range of stone fruit with guarantees from the beginning to the end of the campaign," stated Jose Maria Naranjo, Sales & Market Development Manager at Tany Nature, which at this time of the campaign moves around 920,000 kilos each day in its fields and warehouses.

"In fact, since the frost significantly reduced Lleida's production this year, there are companies that are carrying out collaboration agreements with Extremadura producers to be able to provide service to their customers," he added. "The quality of Extremadura's fruit is excellent this year. We are not disappointing our customers, either in terms of quality, service, or volumes.”

Even though the price of summer fruit is more expensive this year, Jose Maria Naranjo stated: "We are still not in a period in which supply and demand are deciding prices, but rather the disproportionate increase in production and handling costs. Nectarine, peach, peach donuts, and plum costs have increased between 38 and 46%, depending on the fruit. Fruit is a product that offers much more than what people pay for and this year the focus is on these added costs to be able to supply it. Our margin is the same as it was 20 years ago, we are just extrapolating the cost increase to the next link in the supply chain.”

The producer and exporter said agriculture, as well as the supply chain, are currently going through a reinvention process. “This year will show us how things will be done from here on. The producer cannot support his crops if they are not economically profitable. That's why many are moving from fruits and vegetables to less‘ social ’crops such as olive, cereal, or nuts."

"Extremadura's fruit sector is becoming increasingly a multi-product production. We are no longer only recognized as the European plum pantry. There is a strong conversion in new varieties of plum that offer greater satisfaction to the consumer and to the different parts of the chain, as well as increasingly more donut peaches and nectarines. Thus, the region's product catalog is more varied and constantly supplied from the beginning to the end of the campaign so customers don't have to go to other production areas," he added.

Based in Zurbaran, Badajoz, Tany Nature markets its fruit in 52 different countries and continues to diversify its product portfolio. "We bet on our own brand and the brands of our distributors. We are not visited by retailers who seek to differentiate their brands by price. We are the choice of those who seek to differentiate their brand with a product that follows high-quality parameters and achieves a good taste while complying with demanding sustainability and social responsibility standards," stated Jose Maria Naranjo.
