"Our time-saving service keeps the fruit as fresh as possible"

The Belgian New Fruit Wharf (BNFW) now has four weekly direct container services. They are from the Maersk, CMA CGM, and Hamburg Süd shipping companies, and the ships dock directly on the quay. Steven Van Der Taelen of Sea-Invest explained this during a press breakfast at the Port of Antwerp stand at Fruit Logistica. "We also have a deal with Dole for a weekly reefer service that delivers their fruit," he said.

"We offload that directly from the ship into automated cold stores. That saves a lot of time, and we can quickly store and deliver the incoming fruit, as fresh as possible and in optimal condition, to the market." This fruit transshipment company also distinguishes itself by having the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC) and doing on-site quality control.

At the press breakfast, several companies gave presentations about innovations at the Port of Antwerp. These included the Port of Antwerp, Foodcareplus, Dockflow, and TrakAssure launching a tracking system. It monitors container and cargo temperatures. Steven spoke about BNFW's service.

"This multi-modal terminal is close to the highway. So, the Belgian Fruit Forwarding Company ensures fast transport for the fruit in an optimally administrative flow," he said. The BNFW handles more than 1.2 million tons of fruit per year.
