Chilean market opens up to papayas from Brazil

Last year, Brazil started to import lemons from Tahiti and to the joy of fruit growers, Chile also officially opened its doors to papaya. Interest in the fruit stemmed from the quality and good reputation of the fruit produced in Brazil, which is considered one of the best in the world, according to the Brazilian Association of Producers and Exporters of Fruit and Derivatives ( ABRAFRUTAS ). With the intention of opening this market, last year Brazil received a technical visit from Chile, to verify phytosanitary control in papaya production.

Abrafrutas has been to Chile with Brazilian producers to learn about the particularities of papaya consumption in the Latin American country. The purpose of this visit was to talk to the importers so that they could learn about the specifics, such as quality, maturation, calibers and other information that could facilitate the commercialization of the fruit.

In 2022, papaya was the sixth most exported fruit in Brazil. Espirito Santo is the largest producer and exporter of papaya. Brazil exports to Europe, the United States and other countries in South America.
