First own-grown melons to arrive from Costa Rica

Next week, the first watermelons the Staay Food Group has cultivated in Costa Rica will arrive in the Netherlands. "Our Costa Rican branch SFG Dulce consists of six cultivation sites with a total area of 550 hectares. To spread the risk, these are situated over four cultivation areas: Parrita, Orotina, Guanacaste, and Bajo Capulin," says Aad van der Kleij of Staay Papendrecht.

The season will begin with seedless watermelons, with Galia following in week 9 and yellow melons and cantaloupe in week 11. The melon specialist expects to receive Piel de Sapo and watermelons in bins too. Due to unfavorable weather conditions, Staay Food Group started a little later this year. "This way, we can guarantee the quality of our Dulce house brand."

“We have Brazilian melons at our disposal for several weeks, so the transition to Costa Rica will be gradual and smooth. Our crops are naturally duly certified, and full traceability is guaranteed. We're looking forward to a good, tasty melon season," concludes Aad.
