"This is a very important week for agriculture and for farmers; the PGI for Peaches of Cieza is already a reality," stated the Department of Agriculture of the City of Cieza.
"In 2015, the City Council of Cieza began a long process that has concluded successfully and that recognizes Cieza's star agricultural product. The current government team set out to obtain the Protected Geographical Indication for Cieza's peach in order to achieve recognition of its proven quality and to position the prestigious Cieza peach in a pre-eminent place in markets around the world."
The mayor, Pascual Lucas, confirmed that the European Commission had already published the concession of the International PGI Cieza Peach in its Official Journal. “This is extraordinary news for Cieza. It highlights the hard work and commitment of our government to advocate for our land and make it an international benchmark. We have achieved a worthy recognition of the work, effort, and perseverance of our present and past farmers.
"It is the end of a complex, arduous, and intense process that fills our people with pride and the illusion they deserve. This is a recognition of our municipality's agriculture, which opens up an infinite number of possibilities for it to shine more," Lucas added.
"We'll be able to label our Baby Gold 6 and Romea peaches with this quality seal at the international level starting April 20, three months after the PGI was published in the DOUE, as established by the rules," stated Antonio Moya, the Councilor for Agriculture.
