According to the latest State of the Crops report of the Junta de Andalucia, corresponding to the week between January 9 and 15, producers in the greenhouses of the region of Poniente Almeriense collected Spanish, French, and Almeria cucumbers. They also harvested Lamuyos, California, and Italian peppers. The harvest was led by red and green peppers, planted in August with a density of 2 plants/m².
The eggplant plants produced about 5 kilos of product per plant (density of 2 plants/m²). The eggplant season started in mid-August and was about halfway by mid January. Many flowers have fallen and there is less production, with decreases of up to 20%.
Fungal diseases were rampant in the tomato greenhouses in the Níjar region as a result of the high daytime temperatures and high humidity. Mildew in particular caused stem rot and affected the quality of the tomatoes. The production losses were considerable, partly due to the death of blossoms due to the warm temperatures in October.
The harvest continued steadily in the bell pepper, aubergine, and courgette greenhouses.
The area devoted to watermelons was lower than in previous seasons, but the fruits continued to grow well thanks to reasonably good weather.
Granada
Cherry, cherry vine, cherry plum, and plum tomatoes of Intense and Smooth varieties were harvested on the coast of the province of Granada. Producers collected class I Rosa de Barbastro pink tomatoes of more than 82 mm in size.
Producers also harvested Dutch, French, and Spanish cucumbers, but the production wasn't very large. Producers harvested green Italian peppers, red and green Lamuyo peppers, and red, yellow, orange, and green California peppers (class I size G peppers that ranged from 71-90 mm), as well as green Musa courgettes (size M).
