As this year’s very early Chinese New Year celebration draws near, on Sunday 22 January, Chile has seen very good sales and movement of hundreds of containers per day since the end of December last year. According to Hernán Garcés Gazmuri, from the Garces Fruit office in Shanghai, China: “The first half of the season has been smooth, both in quality and pricing.”

Garces Fruit is Chile’s largest cherry grower and exporter. “There has not been big price hikes or steep price drops either. It’s been a healthy market where offer and demand for cherries matched perfectly, with a movement of 200-300 containers per day during the last week of December. Now that we’re approaching the Chinese New Year, we can see that different markets in China are absorbing up to 500-600 containers daily (all China). Of course, retailers and e-commerce promotions were activated early in January and that helped everyone in the industry to keep cherries volume flowing to consumers. As Garces Fruit we’re cooperating with most sales channels through our Shanghai based platform Forever Fresh (Shanghai) Fruit Trading Co,” explains Garcés Gazmuri.
Despite the very good first half of the season, Garcés Gazmuri reminds everyone this is only the first half of Chile’s cherry export season, they still have a long way to go. “There’s still half the season ahead, so it’s quite early to give any final analysis.”

In two of the three pack houses of Garces Fruit in Chile they have already switched over to packing other fruit. Their early cherries have already been shipped to China before Dec 31 says Garcés Gazmuri.
