"We want to minimize the impact of chilling damage on avocado quality"

Avocado is a subtropical fruit with a respiratory climacteric, many varieties are oval, with green skin. The main commercial variety, Hass, is purple-black when ripe. Avocados are one of the few fruit varieties that contain significant amounts of fatty acids. The high concentration of monounsaturated fatty acids and other phytochemicals make avocados a very healthy and nutrient-dense fruit.

Chesen BioChem is a company specializing in the production of fresh-keeping products. Cathy, from the company, introduced the company's PlanFresh preservative product for avocados in an interview with FreshPlaza.

“PlanFresh can be seen as a tool to reduce physiological disease in Hass avocados, especially those associated with prolonged cold storage,” said Cathy. “1-MCP has the ability to slow ripening during storage and at the same time significantly reduce the effects of physiological diseases such as chilling damage and peel blackening. When avocados are stored for two months, the use of 1-MCP can reduce the impact of chilling damage on quality. Compared with when 1-MCP is not used, the damage rate of avocados using the product can be reduced from 50%-90% to less than 10%. "

According to Cathy, how to properly use 1-MCP is also critical to the preservation of avocados. "In terms of 1-MCP concentrations, too high a concentration of 1-MCP can unduly delay the ripening time after out of storage and increase the incidence of uneven ripening and even cause Hass avocados to rot, especially if the fruit is stored for a short period of time."

“Appropriate 1-MCP concentrations can effectively achieve a balance that mitigates physiological disturbances. Fruit processors rely on predictable ripening times to maintain supplies, so excessive delays in fruit ripening can be problematic. Another factor worthy of attention is that the harvest period of Hass avocado is very long, and the fruit quality of late-harvested fruit is poorer than that of early and middle-harvested fruits. For late-harvest Hass avocados, a lower concentration of 1-MCP is required to ensure fruit quality after long-term storage,” said Cathy. "In order to solve these problems, 1-MCP combined with controlled atmosphere storage has been widely used in the preservation of Hass avocados, and good results have been achieved, successfully controlling the sensitivity of Hass avocados to chilling damage."

Chesen is dedicated to the pre-harvest and post-harvest agrochemical markets. Currently, Chesen BioChem's products are sold in China. "We are looking for interested partners to distribute the PlanFresh and other agrochemicals."
