Planting of organic kiwifruit in China is increasing year by year

In recent years, as consumers pay more and more attention to the quality and safety of agricultural products, the cultivation of organic kiwifruit in China has increased year by year. However, organic kiwifruit planting is also facing many challenges. Firstly, the planting cost is high, and the output is low. The terminal sales price is often unsatisfactory, and the commercial benefits cannot reach the expected level. Therefore, many planting bases chose to give up organic planting. During the planting process, some planting bases do not have good conditions, such as climate, soil, air, varieties, etc., making them unable to maintain operation for a long time.

Xiangwang Shunong supplies organic kiwifruit from late October to March next year. Mr. Xu Bensong (Jason) from the company recently shared with FreshPlaza the development of the organic kiwifruit market this season.

"Our kiwifruit comes from Xundian County, Kunming City, Yunnan Province. The planting base covers an area of 3,000 mu (around 1,214 hectares), of which 700 mu are planted with organic kiwifruit. The varieties include Plateau Duckbill Organic Kiwifruit (500 mu), and Demite Super Sweet Kiwifruit (200 mu). In addition, we have 300 mu of kiwiberry.”

When asked about the impact of the frequent extreme climate conditions across the country on the growth of organic kiwifruit this year, Mr. Xu said, "Our company's organic planting base in Yunnan encountered the coldest spring in a century, and the amount of rainfall was larger, which led to low temperatures throughout the year. This had a certain impact on the entire organic production. Thanks to the corresponding facilities we have arranged in the base in advance, such as windbreaks, water conservancy sprinkler irrigation, etc. Although the output did not reach the expected number, it still increased by 30% from the previous season. The current price of organic kiwifruit increased compared with the same period last year. Compared with conventional kiwifruit, the price of organic kiwifruit is about 5-10 yuan higher per box."

At this stage, Xiangwang Shunong sells its fruits in first-tier cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, and also gradually supplies to second-tier cities. In addition, the company will also try to export small batches to Dubai in the Middle East this year.

In order to better promote kiwifruit, Xiangwang Shunong developed the brand “Daidaiguo” in addition to the kiwiberry brand “Daiberry”, and promoted its kiwifruit family series products in the form of fruit family IP.

As far as sales channels are concerned, “We operate online and offline at the same time. Our online partners include Hema Fresh, Sam’s Club, Dingdong Maicai, Pupu Supermarket, etc. For the traditional wholesale channels, we focus on the East China market for external distribution." Mr. Xu Bensong said.
